There’s a tiny island off the coast of Taormina that looks like something from a dream. Connected to the mainland by a narrow sandbar that appears and disappears with the tide, surrounded by crystalline water and framed by towering cliffs — Isola Bella is one of the most romantic places on Earth. And for couples choosing an intimate wedding or elopement in Sicily, it’s an extraordinary setting for Isola Bella elopement photography that you’ll treasure forever.

I’m Andrea Materia, a wedding and elopement photographer based in Catania, Sicily. I’ve photographed countless couples on this iconic island, and I never tire of the magic it creates.

What Is Isola Bella?

Known as the “Pearl of the Ionian”, Isola Bella is a small island nature reserve located in the bay below Taormina. Measuring just 500 metres in circumference, it’s covered in lush Mediterranean vegetation — prickly pear, agave, jasmine, and wild herbs — and surrounded by some of the clearest water in Sicily.

The island was once a private estate, gifted to the town of Taormina by Lady Florence Trevelyan in the late 19th century. Today it’s a protected nature reserve managed by the region, open to visitors and — with proper coordination — available as a backdrop for intimate ceremonies and portrait sessions.

Why It’s Perfect for Elopements

Isola Bella’s appeal for elopements lies in its combination of:

  • Dramatic natural beauty — sea, cliffs, vegetation, the sandbar
  • Intimacy — the small scale feels personal, not performative
  • Uniqueness — how many couples can say they exchanged vows on a private island?
  • Accessibility — it’s easy to reach from Taormina’s centre
  • Photographic variety — rocky shores, lush gardens, water reflections, panoramic views

The Elopement Experience at Isola Bella

Getting There

From Taormina’s centre, you descend to Mazzarò Bay via the funivia (cable car) — a scenic ride that’s an experience in itself. From the beach, the sandbar leads you across to the island. Walking across with your partner, the sea on either side, is a moment I always capture: it’s symbolic, beautiful, and uniquely Isola Bella.

The Ceremony

Most elopement ceremonies at Isola Bella are symbolic — a personal, heartfelt exchange of vows without the bureaucratic requirements of a civil ceremony. You can write your own vows, choose readings that are meaningful to you, and create a ceremony that’s entirely yours.

I work with excellent local celebrants who specialise in intimate ceremonies and can conduct the service in English, Italian, or multiple languages.

For couples wanting a legally binding ceremony, the civil formalities can be completed at the Taormina town hall before or after your Isola Bella celebration. Read my guide to legal requirements →

The Photography

The photographic possibilities at Isola Bella evolve throughout the day:

Morning (best for solitude): Fewer visitors, soft light, calm water. Ideal for couples wanting privacy and tranquillity.

Late Afternoon (best for light): Golden light illuminates the cliffs, the water glows, and the sandbar catches beautiful reflections. This is when the most dramatic images happen.

Sunset: The sky behind Taormina’s cliffs turns pink and gold. The light is warm, soft, and deeply romantic.

I typically recommend a 2–3 hour photography session for an Isola Bella elopement, which gives us time to explore the island, capture portraits in multiple locations, and document the ceremony itself without any rush.

Favourite Photography Spots on Isola Bella

The Sandbar

The narrow strip of sand and pebbles connecting the island to the mainland is Isola Bella’s most iconic feature. Walking along it hand in hand, with the sea on both sides and Taormina’s cliffs above, creates images that define the location.

The Rocky Shore

The island’s perimeter is a mix of smooth rocks, tide pools, and dramatic formations. These textures add depth and interest to portraits, and the proximity to the water means beautiful reflections and spray.

The Garden Paths

The interior of the island is surprisingly lush. Winding paths through Mediterranean vegetation offer dappled light and natural framing — a lovely contrast to the openness of the shore.

The Viewpoints

From certain spots on the island, you can look up at Taormina perched on the cliffs above, or out across the bay toward the coastline. These wider compositions give a sense of place and scale that anchors the intimate moments in their spectacular setting.

What to Wear for an Isola Bella Elopement

Practical considerations for your outfit:

  • Footwear: The terrain includes sand, pebbles, and rock. Many brides go barefoot for the beach portions and carry elegant flats for the rocky areas. Heels are possible but not recommended.
  • Dress: Lighter fabrics that move beautifully in the coastal breeze photograph wonderfully. A train that can be lifted or bustled is practical for the walk across the sandbar.
  • Groom/Partner: Linen suits, light colours, and bare feet suit the setting perfectly.
  • Wind: Expect a gentle breeze. Veils create beautiful movement but should be secured well. I love the way flowing fabric catches the coastal air.

Combining Isola Bella with Other Taormina Locations

Many of my elopement couples combine Isola Bella with other iconic Taormina locations in a single session or over multiple days:

  • Greek Theatre — ancient drama meets modern romance
  • Taormina historic centre — cobblestone streets, piazzas, medieval architecture
  • Villa Sant’Andrea — a beach celebration followed by a luxury dinner
  • Cable car ride — fun, candid moments with stunning views
  • Mount Etna — for the truly adventurous, a portrait session on Europe’s tallest active volcano

I offer half-day and full-day elopement packages that can incorporate multiple locations. Let’s plan your perfect day →

Practical Information

Access and Permits

Isola Bella is a nature reserve with regulated access. I’m experienced in coordinating with local authorities to ensure we have the access we need for your elopement photography. Entry fees are minimal, and I handle the logistics.

Best Time of Year

The reserve is open year-round, but the best conditions for elopement photography are:

  • April–June: Wildflowers in bloom, comfortable temperatures, fewer tourists
  • September–October: Warm seas, golden light, quieter beaches
  • July–August: Hot and busier, but early morning sessions can be magical

Duration

A typical Isola Bella elopement session lasts 2–3 hours. For a ceremony plus extensive portraits, I recommend 3–4 hours.

Guest Count

The intimate nature of the location works best for elopements (2 people) or micro-weddings (up to 10–15 guests). Larger groups are better suited to nearby venues like Villa Sant’Andrea or the San Domenico Palace.

Investment

My Isola Bella elopement packages include:

  • Pre-elopement planning (timeline, logistics, recommendations for celebrants and vendors)
  • 2–3 hours of photography
  • Professional editing and colour grading
  • High-resolution digital gallery (150–300 images)
  • Optional: celebrant coordination, floral arrangements, hair & makeup referrals

Starting from a package that covers the essentials beautifully, with options to add more coverage time or additional locations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can we have a legally binding ceremony at Isola Bella?

The symbolic ceremony takes place on the island; the legal paperwork is typically handled at the Taormina town hall. I can guide you through the process and recommend English-speaking celebrants.

Is Isola Bella accessible year-round?

Yes, though hours and conditions vary by season. I’ll coordinate the timing for optimal access and light.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Sicily’s weather is generally reliable, especially from May to October. If conditions are challenging, we can reschedule or pivot to covered locations in Taormina — I always have a backup plan.

How many photos will we receive from an elopement session?

Typically 150–300 fully edited images from a 2–3 hour session, delivered within 4–6 weeks.

Can we bring guests to Isola Bella?

Yes, small groups are welcome. For anything larger than about 15 people, I’d recommend considering a nearby venue for the main celebration and using Isola Bella for a private portrait session.

Do you help with planning the whole elopement, or just photography?

While photography is my primary role, I’ve helped many couples plan their Taormina elopements and I’m happy to connect you with celebrants, florists, hair and makeup artists, and other vendors I trust.
